ear candy: Sample School

Okay kids, let’s start this music month with a little lesson in sampling…no I’m not about to berate your favourite rapper for being incredibly lazy – just listen, learn and enjoy x

Originally played out on BBC Radio1, this mix is Questlove the DJ (as opposed to Questlove the drummer) at his best.  When he’s not looking after the backbeat for Philidelphia group The Roots he’s behind the ones and twos and no doubt a lot of you have caught him DJing here and there.

This mix brings you through the many different eras and styles of sampling as well as through the many different styles of original music that questlove has in his impressive record collection (check the video!).

Take a peek at the tracklisting below and it’s obvious what we mean about the different styles of sampling – Kanye, Premier, Fatlip, Dre, Large Pro, Jay Dee, Prince Paul, Q-Tip…  Mix that up with The Tempations, The Charmels, Willie Mitchell, Quincy Jones, Labi Siffre, Ahmad Jamal and War and what you end up with is a little 60 minute history lesson on the breaks and a nice reminder what a DJ is supposed to be doing to boot. – Choice Cuts
