[Event] West Indian comedy ‘The Happy Hour’ – May 25th to 26th @ North York Memorial Hall, Toronto

“The Happy Hour” is a full-length West Indian comedy. It is written and directed by playwright/novelist Christopher DeRiggs and performed by Heritage Theatre Company. The cast is headed by some of the best acting talent in the Caribbean, including Robert Whyte, Wayne Bubb and Deleon Walters, actors who have cultivated a following among the Caribbean diaspora for their memorable on-tour performances in productions like “Hurricane Ivan Rufus”, “Sweet in Goat Mouth”, “The Candidate” and more recently, ”De Wedding”.

“The Happy Hour” is a hilarious commentary on the now popular practice at Caribbean funerals to throw a fete after the burial. It is believed that this practice was imported from North America. Whatever its origin, “The Happy Hour” seems to have replaced the traditional wake even in small rural Caribbean villages.
