iamthenublack: Gillean Opoku of Afroklectic

introduce yourself

My name is Gillean Opoku. Born in Australia to Ghanaian parents. I like to think of myself as a creative. I currently study visual communications at University. I am a budding fashion designer. And I run the blog Afroklectic. Afroklectic is a platform for creative Africans like myself to showcase their talents. The blog is also showing that Africa is engulfed with amazing talent.

fav lyric from a song

Sky is the limit and you know that you keep on just keep on pressin’ on. Sky is the limit and you know that you can have what you want, pressin’ what you want. Sky is the limit and you know that you can have what you want, be what you want.

~ Sky’s The Limit Notorious BIG feat. 112

who and what inspires you?

Everything inspires me!! From the rich culture of Africa, to the intricate details on textiles, fashion designers like Lanvin, Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen, magazines, the random person on the train next to me. Absolutely everything inspires me!!

icons past & present

First and foremost God. I wouldn’t be in existence with out him. Politically, I would have to say Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Kwame Nkrumah and Barack Obama. Creatively, Kanye West, Lily Allen and Pharrell Williams would be my pick right now. There is something about them, which I really admire. They are musicians and walking fashion trends. I think it’s amazing how they are dabbing in both fields. Oprah would have to be one of my icons. Words can’t even describe how influential she has been for me. I could write more names, but this would be a very LONG list if I keep going.

the nublack philosophy/mantra according to Gillean Opoku

“You can have anything you want – if you want it badly enough. You can be anything you want to be, do anything you set out to accomplish if you hold to that desire with singleness of purpose.”

– Abraham Lincoln
