[Photos] T-Shirt Stories at Hackney Attic

Last weekend we joined forces with playwright and good friend Inua Ellams to host our first screening. As designers and lovers of the humble cotton staple we knew a screening of ‘T-Shirt Stories: Cotton, Art, & Fun’ was a must.

The intimate screening was held at Hackney Attic and was attended by both new and familiar faces. Guests were also in for a treat as Mr Ellams performed excerpts from his play ‘Black T-Shirt Collection’ which was tells the story of brothers-turned-entrepreneurs as they take their unique t-shirts designs across the globe.

Although the directors of the film weren’t able to join us in person, they kindly recorded a hilarious introduction to the film which covered the history of the t-shirt and looked at how key figures within the fashion and music industry had catapulted what was originally made as a undergarment for soldiers in the military to a much sought-after item. The documentary which at times featured some very interesting characters featured the likes of Don Levy (American Apparel), photographer Terry Richardson and also British fashion designer Katherine Hamnett (of ‘Frankie Says Relax’ and Wham fame).

The chilled evening ended with music and of course t-shirts from some of the freshest brands who came on board as vendors on the night: Idioma, Bros with Fros, dancehall inspired Shimmy Shimmy, and illustrator Berjo Mouanga on behalf of Well Made Magazine/Mantis.

If you’re a lover of t-shirts this film is definitely worth a watch!
