Photographer Michael July seeks funding for his coffee table book ‘Afros – A Celebration of Natural Hair’

I caught wind of this wonderful project from Andrea of Fly Girls and had to do a post on it. A culmination of 5 years worth of travelling across the US, Brooklyn based photographer Michael July has compiled a beautiful coffee table book that celebrates the iconic afro hairstyle. The book features men and women of various ages and races and July is currently seeking funding for this project on Kickstarter. I feel that this is a great attempt at showcasing images that are rarely seen on TV and in magazines so this project has my full support.

About the project

“AFROS – A Celebration Of Natural Hair” intent is to show pictorially the power, beauty and glorious nature of the ‘Fro and also to document in words the deeper and at times whimsical “hairstory” of each of its models. The author shot the majority of these individuals at his photo studio in Brooklyn using colorful & vibrant backdrops personally tailored to each model’s own sense of style and fashion.”
