[Iamthenublack] Carol Ross of POP: A Celebration of Black Fatherhood

Introduce yourself

Carol Ross, I am an artist and advocate for the health, wellness and stability of Black men with children. Photography is currently my main form of expression, producing is my habit and I am best known as author of the book, Pop: A Celebration of Black Fatherhood.

POP is all about acknowledging and celebrating Black fathers but often that effort is overshadowed by negative media attention or our own misguided mantras about ”deadbeat” dads. Too many of us have bought into the notion that “most” or over 80% of Black men are missing from their children’s lives, while a large percentage of those stats contain fathers who, while may not always share the primary home with their children, are still very much a part of their children’s lives or are fighting hard (often in a failed court system) to be there. How often do we dialog about or acknowledge the love, support and presence of the fathers who are there? Wouldn’t it have a more positive effect on our children if we did?

Favourite song lyric

“Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly”

– Paul McCartney

I’m inspired by

A child’s potential, the energy of ocean waves, the vulnerability in being in love, the wood frog that freezes in winter and thaws in spring, anything that makes me laugh, crème brulee.

My icons past/present

My parents are my present icons. Past icons are Khalil Gibran, Jane Roberts.

Thenublack philosophy

I try to consciously live and create in the now. We cannot criticize yesterday, because it is only a memory. We cannot rely on tomorrow because it is only a dream and once it comes, it is still in the now…everything we experience is orchestrated by us in the now. When we contemplate what that really means, life begins to feel more pliant.
