[Event] The Gifty Foundation: Educating young people in Ghana about Sickle Cell – Charity Launch & Fundraiser

Consisting of experienced professionals predominantly from media, entertainment, music and medical backgrounds based in Accra, Ghana and London, the Gifty foundation was set up to help educate young people about the blood condition Sickle Cell. The organisation is having a launch party and fundraiser which will include an auction of some great prizes, Ghanian food and also a presentation by the organization’s founder Tom McDonnell.

We are a group of people whose lives have been touched by the problem, directly or indirectly through the life of our friend Gifty. When two people carrying the sickle-cell trait have a baby there is a 1 in 4 chance that the child will have full-blown Sickle Cell Disease. 25% of the Ghanaian population carry the trait, yet very few even know what Sickle Cell is. In countries where it’s most common in sub-Saharan Africa, those that have the condition usually suffer from a lifetime of painful and damaging health problems.

Sickle Cell Disease is a painful and life-threatening inherited blood condition. Even though 25% of Ghanaians carry the gene, and 2% of babies born every year have the condition, very few are aware of the problem or their own status. We will educate, test and empower young people across Ghana so that they can make informed choices when they find partners and have children. It’s simply better to know what the future might hold.
