[Photoset] I am thenublack at The Original Gallery

There’s nothing scarier than wondering if people will show up to a private view, the double checking of whether you put the right date and time all of that had me feeling rather nervous on my way to Hornsey library for the private view for the show….on reflection I really had nothing to worry about 🙂

The evening was attended by a number of the artists who were interviewed about their works by Annalouise Oakland, one of the other artists whose exhibition ‘Wall of Sound’ was also on display which featured the works of a variety of Jazz musicians. The eclectic Jazzman John Clarke opened the evening with a great poem about John Coltrane, followed then by painter and radio broadcaster Alan Wolfson who’s witty words made us all laugh. Also in attendance was spoken word artist Zena Edwards, Abe Gibson also performed a selection of works one of which told the story of two neighbours in a council block, one White one West Indian – it was beautiful.

It was a great evening meeting and greeting both old and new faces and finishing off the night giving a bit of a backwards speech (saying thanks and then introducing myself…I blame the nerves). Having spent a good part of last year trying to put on a show and  then a space coming through when I least expected it was definitely a blessing. In hidsight organising a show whilst you’re not even in the country wasn’t the best idea but through all the stresses the final product was most definitely worth it. It’s so surreal seeing something you’ve imagined actually happening and I definitely had to do a double take when walking into the gallery on the evening of the private view.

A huge thank you to Hornsey Library’s Elena Pippou for all of her help and advice, and to the artists:  Kinglsey Davis, Abi Wright, Berjo Mouanga, Sherelle Bailey, Andrew Sinclair,  Terrence Adegbenle, Shine Shine SA, Kiboko Hachiyon and Jeremy Salmon.

The exhibition runs until October 29th
