Happy Mother’s Day

Today marks the first Mother’s Day I’ll celebrate without my mum being here. There’s so much I can say about the impact of losing one so close but I can honestly say she left me with the greatest amount of wisdom and love. The only thing I can hope and pray is that I can pass the love she gave to me onto my own children.

Today I’d like to say Happy Mother’s Day to all the women that have been mother figures to me – thank you for putting in as much input as my mother did even though we may not have been related by blood. I truly applaud the efforts of all Black mothers raising children today, the media and ignorant rappers may have a lot of negativity to say about you as women but without your words of encouragement and sacrifice a lot of us (including myself) wouldn’t be half the people we are today. Thank you for making the dreams we had seem attainable when everyone else thought they were crazy.

And so our mothers and grandmothers have, more often than not anonymously, handed on the creative spark, the seed of the flower they themselves never hoped to see, or like a sealed letter they could not plainly read.
