iamthenublack: Jacquita of Akabi Designs

Introduce yourself

My name is Jacqueline, known to some as Jacquita. I am a creative, a traveler, a social entrepreneur, businesswoman and a Christian. I have a strong interest in utilizing what I have in my hands – my god given skills and making something from that skill. I believe that ‘Africa is the future’ and support the continent through sourcing and producing presently in Kenya and Ghana.

I believe highly in protecting the planet we live in and so am working towards doing better in my business and to be more considered in my actions of everyday life.

I have recently begun to work with a great organization called fashion ch4nge (fashion for change) who aim through fashion to make a difference in African countries as well as other global regions.

At Akabi the mission statement focuses on promoting African, Empowering woman and loving earth by using natural fabrics and recycled materials.

Favourite lyric from a song?

Love isn’t love ’til you give it away by Commissioned, the words say it all, and akabi means love

Who and what inspires you?

So many things inspire me. I love the work of the Japanese designers yohji yamamoto, rei kawakubi as well as michiko koshino but also am an artist first and foremost and so appreciate the works of the great artists Cezanne, Michelangelo, da Vinci, Edward hopper, Kandinsky…I could go on.

As well as an art lover I love to visit new countries and to simply speak to people. Old people are my favourites as they have a lot of experience and can teach me a lot.

Icons, past and present

I appreciate so many, such as Nelson Mandela as he shows me tenacity and determination and self belief, Robert kiyosaki as he shows me that if I develop my financial vocabulary, I work towards and envision my goal then I can achieve it…But I must start with a dream in place, and then lastly it has to be Jesus Christ as a man who was oh so powerful but exceedingly humble – he taught me selfless love and how to consider others above my own needs

Thenublack philosophy/mantra according to Jacqueline

“Be not weary in well doing…For in due season we shall reap if we faint not”

Galatians 6:9
