introduce yourself

I am Cassi Amanda Gibson, 20 years of age, a true vagabond. My art helps me heal my disconnection to my past and my saudades*, my unexplained homesickness to?.. I am not exactly sure where. 

My family resides in Mozambique- Province Zambezia, my 20 yrs of existence I have lived and visited many of places and savoured some of Earths best kept and known secrets from Cotonou, Benin to Queens NYC. I am a also a travel photographer, soon to be Filmmaker.

what inspires you

My culture, my people, my ancestry, the opposite sex, my creator, my universe and the unknown. My yearning for something more- my incompleteness, my nostalgia, my village- muito saudades.

I am currently exploring all my peoples black creative manifestations in my lifetime and past.

who are your past/present icons and why?

My current present icon is my grandmother. Julius Nyrerere of Tazania and Samora Moises Machel from my country-  I value African socialism, UJAMA & UMOJA.

*Saudades is a Galician and Portuguese word for a feeling of nostalgic longing for something or someone that one was fond of and which is lost. It often carries a fatalist tone and a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might really never return.
