[Art + Design] visual artist Miss Me pays tribute to musical legends in her ‘Jazz Saints’ series

Montreal based artist Miss Me is determined not to allow her artwork to be defined by a box, and when you see her work you can see why. It’s vibrant splashes of colour bring life to a city street’s most drab concrete walls.

“I don’t really like that term (street art)… sounds mainstream and very defined, in a box. I am an artist, yes, I just use the street as the gallery for my thoughts.”

Her Jazz Icons series which features the likes of musical greats such as Miles Davis, BillieHoliday, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone, George Gershwin and newly added Amy Winehouse are inspired by the artists own musical background.

I am a jazz singer. I’ve been listening to jazz and singing jazz for many many years now. It is part of my culture, my everyday life. It was my way to pay hommage to some great artists that too many of the kids today don’t know and don’t realize how much they have impacted the music they listen to today. The idea of the Icon is the most obvious way for me to bring their spirits back in our streets, as prophets to our music. The contrast of the classical icon, the jazz singer and the raw street is something I really like. I feel they all compliment each other.
