[Competition] Win goodies from The South is Blooming: An eclectic boutique for all things South African

Originally started as a blog, South African online boutique The South is Blooming became a ‘mix store’ selling an eclectic range of homeware, fashion accessories and baby goods. Having recently branched out into music, art prints and literature, and they hope to sell photography from emerging artists in the near future.

Speaking about the  company, its creator Marian Counihan says:

I started the South is Blooming because South Africa has gone through such a massive creative-cultural explosion since the end of apartheid. For the past ten years I’ve been living in the Netherlands, but whenever I’m back in SA (my home country) I get totally fired up by the creative energy there. So I decided to start importing the products that result to Europe … many of them are made by friends, or friends of friends, all just small-scale designers and projects who try to create something new.

For me they are an expression of modern (South) Africa: combining a warm and easygoing nature with a strong and original design sense. And they are really sophisticated, often using contemporary remixes of traditional motifs, which is still sometimes surprising to a European audience who expect curio-type craft. The South is Blooming is exactly about bringing new African design and craft to the rest of the world, and about undermining the clichéd images that people have in their heads about Africa.
